Blue oilseed poppy
Breeder: Institute of Cruciferous Crops of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine
The first Ukrainian low-morphine variety of oilseed poppy. Developed by selection from local plant populations. Protected by author’s certificate No. 264 and entered in the State Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine in 1996.
The stem is 90–120 cm tall, upright, covered with hairs and a waxy bloom, and forms 4–6 additional productive stems. The root system is a taproot. Flowers are large, white with a purple eye. The capsule is spherical with a many-rayed stigma. Seeds are blue. Thanks to its low alkaloid content (up to 0.18% in ripe capsules) it cannot serve as a raw material for narcotics.
The seed contains 48–56% oil with excellent taste, suitable for food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic uses.
Sown early in spring, before early cereals.
Seeding rate – 1.5–2.0 kg/ha.
Growing season – 116–120 days.
Seed yield – 1.6–2.0 t/ha.
